Franz Kafka was one of the most influential and representative writers of the 20th century. Born in Prague on July 3, 1883, to a Jewish family of German origin, Kafka left an indelible mark on world literature with his works that explore themes of alienation, bureaucracy, absurdity, and the human condition. Kafka's most famous works include "The Metamorphosis" (Die Verwandlung), "The Trial" (Der Prozess), and "The Castle" (Das Schloss). These stories are characterized by dreamlike atmospheres and characters who struggle against incomprehensible forces and oppressive bureaucratic systems. Kafka's writing is known for its ability to evoke a sense of discomfort and estrangement in the reader. Kafka grew up in a middle-class family in Prague, where he studied law at Charles University. He worked as a lawyer in an insurance company, but his true passion was writing. His life was marked by a complex relationship with his father, Hermann Kafka, and health problems that plagued him throughout his life. Kafka died on June 3, 1924, in Kierling, near Vienna, due to tuberculosis. Kafka's legacy is considered one of the fathers of literary modernism. His works have influenced many subsequent writers and artists, including Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Gabriel García Márquez. The term "Kafkaesque" has entered common usage to describe absurd, oppressive, or labyrinthine situations. Prague is a city that often appears in Kafka's work, albeit in a transfigured and symbolic way. The writer's hometown is still a destination for literary pilgrimages today, with places like Kafka's house on Celetná Street attracting visitors from around the world.
