"Cine de Papel": the exhibition celebrating Cuban film poster art
Rome, October 28, 2025 - The Museum of Rome in Trastevere is hosting the exhibition "Cine de Papel. Cuban Posters of Italian Cinema from the Bardellotto Collection", a remarkable collection of 96 creative posters that reinterpret Italian films with originality and ingenuity. The exhibition, promoted by the Department of Culture of Rome Capitale - Sovrintendenza Capitolina, is organized by the Centro Studi Cartel Cubano and curated by Luigino Bardellotto and Patrizio De Mattio.
The Councilor for Culture of Rome Capitale, Massimiliano Smeriglio, attended the opening of the exhibition "Cine de Papel. Cuban Posters of Italian Cinema" at the Museum of Rome in Trastevere, together with the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Italy, Mirta Granda Averhoff.
The history of Cuban cartels In the 1960s, in Cuba, movie posters were not just promotional tools, but actual works of art capable of telling an era. Cuban graphics, also known as cartel cubano, developed in those years with the establishment of the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry (ICAIC). ICAIC's artists and designers created posters not only to promote Cuban and foreign films but also to spread political and social messages. A unique style During the Cold War and American embargo, movie posters from abroad were not imported to Cuba. Local graphic designers were thus forced to create new versions of posters, reinterpreting upcoming titles in an original way. This led to the development of a unique graphic style that translates the essence of films into original forms and techniques. The exhibition The "Cine de Papel" exhibition presents a selection of Cuban film posters that reinterpret Italian films with a unique and original style. The displayed posters do not use images of the main actors, but rather create an atmosphere and mood that reflects the essence of the film. The exhibition also includes layouts, sketches, and Italian posters, totaling around 140 works. Dates and location The "Cine de Papel. Cuban Posters of Italian Cinema from the Bardellotto Collection" exhibition will be open to the public from October 29 to February 22 at the Museum of Rome in Trastevere, Piazza S. Egidio, 1.
